The Mayor’s Office Civic Memory Working Group is made up of historians, architects, visual and performing artists, writers and other experts in the history and built form of Los Angeles. It now numbers more than 60 members, including a core of 35 or so who have participated since the start of the initiative. It has produced a detailed report, making a series of concrete recommendations about how the city can engage more productively with its past (even, and perhaps especially, when that past is fraught) and with the broader notion of civic memory.
